Many businesses that have existed for years wonder why one day suddenly their client base has diminished. In some of the cases there have been no rate increases or termination of particular services or products, but yet still, there has been a change for the worse in terms of the volume of business. What many people sometimes overlook is the impact that competition has on the success of their business. One of the most important things that a company needs to continuously do is market and competitor research to ensure that they are fully aware of where the industry is and where their company fits in to that.

In doing market and competitor research a business needs to be able to find out about changes in the operating market as well as how the market and the customers have changed along the way. In some cases, the needs of the customers have changed, and if a business does not keep in tune with that then they find themselves becoming obsolete over time. Working with a marketing company allows organizations to get effective market and competitor research done to be able to maintain their position in the market.

Some of the services offered by a good marketing organization include:

• Understanding the needs of customers as well as the current position of the market
• Profiling the competition to see just how effective they are compared to your business
• Identifying risks as well as minimizing the risks that the business could be susceptible to

By understanding the market as well as the customers and their needs, a good marketing organization is able to ascertain the current success rate of the organization and what needs to be done with it in order to maintain that success. Many companies overlook the importance of focusing on what competitors are doing, while others view competitor profiling as spying. However, there are very legal and ethical ways to monitor the progress of your competitors to ensure your company is catering to the needs of the client base.

A good market research company is able to:

• Allow its clients to identify the needs and requirements of their customers
• Determine what is currently important to the customer as well as what is not important to the customer
• Determine how the organization is viewed by the customer
• Identify whether or not the needs of the customer are currently being met by the organization

By identifying these aspects, a company that handles market and competitor research would be able to focus on aligning the customer's needs with what the organization is able to provide. These activities that fall in line with this alignment include things like customer surveys market researches and staff surveys.

Taking care of your customers and your business base means doing market and competitor research to ensure that you are providing the service your customers want and you are not giving it away to competition.
