Getting their windows truly clean can be a struggle for many people. Often this is due to a lack of knowledge or technique, as well as not having the proper cleaning supplies needed to get the job done. Professional janitorial services use specific cleaning supplies because they work.
Use Plenty of Water: When you are washing the exterior of windows, make sure to use lots of water to eliminate the dirt that accumulates. Be a bit more careful when you're working inside because you don't want a puddle on the floor. One of the best cleaning agents is water and it also is friendly to the environment.
Use the Right Tools: You can choose to use a squeegee like the professionals or you could use one of the microfiber cloths or rags that also work fairly well. A squeegee will require that you use soap, but with a microfiber rag you can just use plain water.
Clean Your Equipment: Whatever tools you use, make sure they are clean before you use them. Dirty equipment, including sponges, applicators, squeegees and cleaner will just leave dirt on your windows. You also need to rinse your equipment often when you do more than one window at a time. If you don't you'll be carrying the dirt over to the next window.
Time of the Day: Never wash your windows in full sunlight, as you may get a streaking problem because of the temperature of the glass. Wash the windows with morning sun in the afternoon and the window with afternoon sun in the morning. I know this cuts the job in two, but most of us have to many windows anyway to do them in one go.
Squeegee technique 1: Always move the squeegee at an angle, so the water can run down the glass. If you don't aim the rubber this way you will create streaks. Just watch a pro if you get a chance and you will know what I mean.
Squeegee Tip 2: You should always have a rag handy to clean the squeegee's rubber blade after each stroke. This removes excess water from the blade which would otherwise leave marks the next time you apply it to the window.
Squeegee Tip 3: Overlapping your strokes is the most important squeegee technique. Don't cut the strokes too close or you might miss a spot and leave a water mark on the window.
Squeegee Lesson 4: Horizontal strokes are more effective than vertical strokes. This is because water runs down due to gravity. It is easier to systematically clean windows when you use horizontal strokes. Just wipe off your strokes' end lines with a cloth or microfiber to get rid of the water marks.
Microfiber: I prefer this technique because you don't need to learn any specific technique. If you use plenty of water your windows will be crystal clear once again.
Secret Tip: If your windows won't come really clean for some reason, when they're dry rub them with a dry newspaper. It's not the cleanest thing, but it really works, even for cars.
