You ve probably seen the software programs that help you write sales letters or marketing letters. Or some of them have templates for your sales copy where you can just plug your information in and then stick the output on your web site.
The question is, do these programs really work or are they shortcut that you might as well skip? Before you spend your hard earned money, I think that s a fair question for a consumer to ask.
I m a decent person to answer this question because I created this genre of software originally. I think when you understand why, you ll see if these programs can be of value to you or not.
Before I get into that, you may be wondering if you even need a sales letter and how you can use it. My idea of a letter is taking the same things you d tell someone in person, over the phone, on a webinar or a teleseminar and then putting that in print or on the computer screen.
What s more, the same exact formula, sales message and concepts you use in any one of those formats will work in other ones. You really aren t writing a letter. You re delivering a sales message. And there s a large variety of vehicles you can use to deliver that sales message.
And there s an equally large number of things you can accomplish with sales copy. You can sell a service, move unused inventory, hire an employee, get people to join your Internet marketing ezine or email list, get people to post on your blog and basically persuade them to take any action you want as long as you have and use the right sales psychology.
Back in 1996 I taught a 12 step formula for writing sales copy. The problem was that the people who read and studied my information weren t following the stupid formula. I found this to be very frustrating.
One day that proverbial Eureka moment hit. And I got the idea of virtually forcing people to follow the formula. That s when the idea for the first fill in the blanks and write a letter software program was born.
Here are some things you should know about what these programs will and will not do for you.
1. They will force you to follow a process that has worked for the software developer.
2. They will guide you kind of like training wheels on a bike.
3. They will help you think through the process of writing your sales copy. It s useful to have a guide.
But there are things they also will not do:
1. They will not substitute for a brain. You d think that s obvious but it s not. Some people mistakenly hope they can buy a program, type in junk and get out art.
It s not going to happen. Like the old time programmers say, garbage in, garbage out.
The purpose of these programs is not to think for you. It s to guide you through the process of thinking a certain way. They re a thinking tool.
2. They will not create a masterful letter for you.
These software programs are designed for people who have never written a sales letter. And they re made to help you get up to a certain point of proficiency. That s all. They won t turn your letter into a world class work of art.
3. They will not replace the human brain.
You can assist the human brain with its thinking process but you can t replace the human brain.
