If you want fast results the best thing to do is find diversified ways to build a lot of links. I always say be aggressive in your link building. Work on your site every single day. You have to work on building links every day there is no exception to this. If you are not getting new links every single day then you are not doing your job as an owner of a site. If you outsource it that is fine but someone needs to build links to your website every single day that it is in existance, that is the only way to get to the top of Google.
Don't be afraid to change. When you get to number 2 you are going to need to make changes to get to number one. For some reason at number 2 Google does not think your site is the most relevant to those keywords. So what you do is keep working until you are number one. Make changes that is the best thing you can do, if they hurt you then you can always change them back. You might be surprised what one little thing can do.
You have to be aggressive, go out and fight for that position one. This is a battle you cannot be passive and get there. Build lots of links with lots of different methods. On top of that don't get frozen, make changes to your website frequently. CNN ranks number one for news and their page is different every day, find what works and make it work better.
