I work everyday with corporate professionals who are looking to leave their jobs and get into the internet marketing industry. Their first question is, "How do I get started?" The next question is, "How do I get prospects coming to me?"
Some have already started their marketing campaign. But they are getting little response.
So here is the first question you need to ask yourself. "What group of people are you marketing to? Have you made a target market selection?"
For a distributor in a skin care business, is her market everyone who has skin? I don't think so.
A rep in this type of business would not be very successful with this type of marketing strategy. A much more targeted market is needed.
A huge market, all people who have skin, is extremely competitive. Even if a person finds your website, why would the prospect ever consider buying from you? Your website looks like all the millions of other websites.
When you are targeting such a large market, you don't know what their wants and needs are.
Your company may offer the greatest skin products ever invented. But if the your products don't match your market's needs, you won't get a sale.
Even those that have a need for your product will most likely not buy from you. Why should they? There are many other websites out there offering the same thing.
The prospects in your target market have specific needs. Your website or blog must address those needs, answer their specific questions, and solve their specific problem.
The skin care market consists of many target or niche markets. Your target market should be small enough so there is limited competition. On the other hand, it must be large enough to have income potential. For example, here are three target markets.
1. This market has tried many skin care products that have failed to provide the results they are looking for. 2. This market consists of people who have a specific skin condition. They are looking for someone who understands their situation and can solve their problem. 3. This market consists of baby boomers. They are looking for products that can solve their aging skin problem. How do you stand out from all the other anti-aging skin products that are being promoted on the internet?
Obviously, you need to make a narrow target market selection in order to be successful. You must take an educational approach to your marketing - never promotional. What are we trying to accomplish here?
First of all, you will find far less competition in a fairly narrow niche market.
Secondly, you give your market solutions to their problems.
What are their dreams? What are their questions? What are they searching for on the internet? What problems do that have that need to be solved? Do they lose sleep at night worrying about certain things?
Then you must solve their problems and answer their questions. This must come across in your marketing. How do you determine the problems your market needs to have solved?
You need to find websites that attract people in your niche market. Message boards, forums, and blogs are great places to go to find out what the people in your market are asking. Search on Google or Yahoo for keywords related to your niche market. Find out what problems are being addressed, but more importantly, what areas are not being adequately addressed. Yes, I know. This takes a lot of time. But it will be worth the time it takes.
A great way to learn the needs of your potential customer is to ask them directly what problems they need to have solved.
Understanding your target market, their needs, and their wants, is critical to success in an internet marketing business. The next step is give them the answers they need.
Your marketing must be directed at the problems of your target market. When they check you out, they see that you have the solutions they are seeking. A woman who is struggling has just met someone who understands her problem and can help her. Chances are you just made a sale.
Here is my suggestion. Make a list of several possible target markets. Then select only one to address first. Hold onto the list of the markets you did not choose. You can very possibly market to those groups later.
Make a target market selection. Keep an open mind as you research that market on the internet. You may find new trends in the marketplace that you can address. You may find the need for products that are not offered. This gives you an opportunity to address these issues.
