It's so frustrating! You have an excellent product or service. You've had a professional design a snappy website for you. Yet you're still wondering, where's the business? Here's how to get a consistent flow of targeted traffic to your website.
To be an effective online vendor, you have to realize that you must market your business every day. Millions of people use the Internet in any 24-hour span. The Information Superhighway is full of digital travelers trying to find their way through billions of bits of information. The way to be successful in a business in this environment is to learn how to get the attention of people most likely to be interested in your product or service.
In order to obtain consistent, targeted traffic as an Internet business, you must engage in consistent, targeted marketing to attract that kind of traffic. After two decades of experience with the Internet, online marketers have identified four primary ways to get the attention of targeted customers: Pay-per-click advertising, Ezine Advertising, Joint ventures with other online businesses or marketers and Article Marketing.
Pay-per-click advertising's best example is probably Google's AdWords advertising. The system is simple: place an ad with Google that comes up on its topic searches, and pay according to the number of people who click on your ad to get to your website. The drawback to this method is that while it can bring you lots of traffic, those visitors don't automatically convert into sales. From a business standpoint, this means that your cost of doing business is higher in pay-per-click; you pay for each click-through, but each click-through doesn't necessarily buy your product or service so that you can recoup your investment.
Things are trickier with pay-per-click advertising. The method for getting a pay-per-click ad is simple enough: You simply pay a search engine, such as Google, Yahoo or Bing, for an ad that will come up whenever someone searches for a topic related to your business. Then you pay an additional fee for every user who "clicks through" the ad to get to your website. This marketing method can bring a quick increase in traffic, but the higher volume of traffic doesn't mean a corresponding increase in sales.
Joint Ventures are where you and another business swap mutual promotion. In a setup like this, you email their ad or offer to your subscriber or mailing list and they do the same for you. Since you're already working with a list of interested customers, this method tends to build up real business faster than pay-per-click or ezine advertising, which drive up traffic but don't help your conversion rate.
Of these four methods, article marketing has been proven to be the most effective at getting a consistent flow of targeted traffic to your website. Content is king on the Internet, which eats content the way a cow would go through a salad bar. You're already an expert in your particular field of business; all you have to do with article marketing is to write up the various parts of what you know in 500 words or less.
The easiest way to start with article marketing is to write up the questions that customers ask you about your field, and the turn your answers into articles of 500 words or less. You don't have to be a prize-winning writer to write these articles. Just use a style that's conversational, as if you were chatting with a friend. Make sure, though, that your article is spelled correctly (don't rely on your word processor's spellchecker), because nothing says "amateur" to an online reader quicker than a bunch of misspelled words. Care enough about the article - which, after all, is intended to market your business - to be sure that it's spelled right and uses correct grammar. Have someone else in the business read your article before you post it, just to be sure its factually correct as well.
Try any of these four methods, or a combination of them, to get that consistent flow of targeted traffic to your website in order to assure your online business success.
