Just like all other prequels, Hermione Granger still remains to be a main and major character in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. But in this segment, her character takes a changed turn to give the whole novel an attractive and appealing nod. This is, when she side by side struggles with her own growing emotions for Ron and helps Harry through the sixth year at Hogwarts where he faces new travails and challenges.
In the sixth year, Hogwarts hires Horace Slughorn as the New Advanced Potions teacher who forms a "Slug Club" for some special and talented students. Hermione becomes one of the lucky students to be a member of that club. Later she uses this as a podium to try to pair up with Ron Weasley.
Throughout the school years, Hermione has helped Ron. She still tries to assist Ron with everything that he needs a hand in. In this sequel, she aids Ron at the time of Keeper's tryouts by furtively jinxing Cormac McLaggen which forces him to miss his last save and Ron is welcomed on the squad.
Likewise, her feelings for Ron begin thumping so she herself makes a move by willingly inviting him to the Slughorn's Christmas Party but Ron bails on her and instead hangs out with Lavender Brown in retribution for Hermione having kissed Krum. However, this does not depress her, in lieu, forces her to make a plan for bringing Ron back with herself. She intentionally dates McLaggen but this, however, has no consequence on Ron and the whole plan fails. Eventually, she abandons her date and leaves in the halfway of the party.
Both persist to argument with each other until Ron suffers an assault of poisoning from contaminated mead. This frightens Hermione that she might loose him forever. Hence, this twist in the story makes them realise each other's importance in their lives and forces them to square with each other and extend a firm, honest and reliable relationship.
After the death of Dumbledore, Hermione vows to stay with Harry and help in finishing the mission of destroying the Horcruxes that Dumbledore left for him. This strengthens the bond of amity between both of them, and glorifies the character of Hermione to a great degree. But there is also a bit of competition between harry and Hermione that exists almost throughout their school's sixth year.
Harry gets the possession of a Potion's course book that seems to belong to a person nicknamed as "The Half Blood Prince". This book contains scribbled notes that are different from the instructions inscribed by the author in the book. Harry follows the scribbled notes and every time ends up as being the highest scorer. This irritates Hermione who is used to being the first position holder in the class, as she considers this act as swindling and repels Harry from doing it but remains disappointed.
This creates a little commotion in their relationship as she considers Harry of taking the undue credit for only following some scribbled instructions instead of the official ones and becoming an outstanding student in the eyes of Slughorn, the Potion's teacher, which in actual he was not. However, soon enough both find themselves in other problems that need their unity and interdependence forcing them to leave it as a matter of past.
